Batch of Large White Caterpillars (~20-30)
Large White (Pieris brassicae) Butterfly Caterpillars 20+.
This is a full clutch of hatched eggs UK Native Butterfly.
HATCHED: Week Commencing: 14/07/2025
Eggs batches can vary in size but usually contain 20-30 eggs.
These are a great starter species for those interested in raising butterflies.
The larvae feed on a variety of plants and are very partial to Nasturiums and most plants in the Cruciferae family - they will happily feed on cabbage from the supermarket if you have nothing in your garden to offer them!
Other host plants include:
Horseraddish
Mustard
Sweet Rocket
Watercress
and of course, Nasturtium.
These are a UK native butterfly so can be released.
Raising caterpillars and butterflies does take time and effort - although caterpillars can be messy, they thrive in a clean environment.
While your caterpillars are small they can be kept in plastic tupperware boxes (with the lid on!) - just place some kitchen roll in the bottom, and then add your host plant and add your caterpillars. They must be cleaned every day to remove all frass (poo) and fresh food must be added every day.
Caterpillars go though a number of moults as they grow, during the times they are moulting it is important not to disturb them by removing them from their plants, you can simply just move the old leaf in the cleaned tub, they will move on to the fresh food when they are ready.
As your caterpillars grow they will need more space thrive and a net cage is an ideal environment - when your caterpillars are ready to pupate they will climb up the walls of the cage age pupate on the sides or ceiling, emerging 2-3 weeks later as butterflies. It is important that the correct environment is provided as upon emerging your butterflies will need to climb and will hang upside down while they plump up their wings and dry out which takes a few hours.
Provide your butterflies with fresh flowers on which to feed - and as these are a UK native species you can release them.
Will be sent in a petri dish or plastic tub with enough food to last the journey.
Make sure you have food available for when they arrive as they will need cleaning and feeding.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE SHIP EVERYTING 24HR TACKED, AND WE ONLY SHIP MONDAY-WEDNESDAY TO AVOID ORDERS BEING STUCK IN THE POST OFFICE OVER THE WEEKEND.
If there is going to be any delay with shipping your order due to things like extreme weather we will let you know - ensuring your insects arrive happy and healthy is our number one priority.
